Why metadata and self-hosting are important

Metadata is something that covers everything but the content of messages. It has less legal protection, but it can be incredibly informative. You can draw plenty of conclusions from a list of who someone is talking to and when! The Electronic Frontier Foundation explains this well on their website.

Of course, service providers can promise not to store or track such metadata, but governments can simply force them to do so if necessary. Private, group, and public calls
