Nextcloud
Nextcloud offers the industry’s best on-premise content collaboration platform. Nextcloud technology combines the convenience and ease of use of consumer-level solutions such as Dropbox and Google Drive with business needs for security, privacy and control.
With more than 400,000 servers in the network, Nextcloud is one of the most popular solutions for organizing file sharing and content collaboration.
Key differences
Putting IT back under control
Nextcloud delivers on-premises solutions and puts you in control of your data. Your data is in your data center, on a server you manage, not floating somewhere in the cloud. The company’s products combine powerful capabilities for controlling and monitoring data exchange, including unique file and workflow access control features, extensive audit logs, detailed sharing controls, and much more.
Security comes first
The main advantage Nextcloud has over its competitors is the security of its customers. The software product offers many unique and innovative security technologies, as well as integrated end-to-end encryption on the client side with enterprise-grade key processing and a wide range of security enhancements.
User-centric approach
Nextcloud believes that an open, transparent development process and a clear focus on the needs of users and customers lead to a better product.

Why metadata and self-hosting are important
Metadata is something that covers everything but the content of messages. It has less legal protection, but it can be incredibly informative. You can draw plenty of conclusions from a list of who someone is talking to and when! The Electronic Frontier Foundation explains this well on their website.
Of course, service providers can promise not to store or track such metadata, but governments can simply force them to do so if necessary. For example, in the UK, ISPs were forced to record visits to their customers’ websites. And that’s not even mentioning the fact that even privacy-oriented companies can suddenly be sold to a foreign organization. As with information content, the best way to protect metadata is to prevent it from leaking from your infrastructure in the first place.
Nextcloud Talk functionality
Autonomy
Nextcloud Talk is a fully autonomous on-premises audio/video and chat service. It includes web and mobile applications and provides a high degree of security with an easy-to-use experience.
Message status indicators show when a message has been sent and received. For greater privacy, users can disable this on their side.
An additional high-performance Nextcloud Talk server provides scalability, reliability, and enterprise-class functionality.
Private, group, and public calls
Nextcloud Talk allows you to call customers and partners in an individual or group scenario.
Users can invite other chat participants to shared rooms on the Nextcloud server using a URL. The chat, which remains active even when the user leaves the room, allows participants to easily share messages, links, and notes.
Customizable chat visibility allows team members and/or guests to find and join open chats.
Collaboration in Nextcloud
Nextcloud allows you to share documents directly in the chat, and they will be available to all participants in the dialog. Project integration allows you to link chats to files, calendars, tasks, and other resources for easy retrieval.
Online office solutions provide a sidebar with Talk for chatting and calling with participants. This allows you to drag and drop a document into the chat and edit it with other participants during video calls.
Nextcloud Whiteboard
Nextcloud Whiteboard is one of the applications that is useful during audio/video calls or during regular chats. It is an interactive whiteboard where all participants can draw lines and shapes, take notes and write text, upload images, make presentations, and much more.
Files created with the help of an interactive whiteboard are saved among other files and thus can be easily used in the future for collaboration.
Integration with other platforms
Nextcloud Bridging allows you to connect meeting rooms to one or more channels on other Talk servers, as well as to other services such as IRC, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Matrix, Mattermost, XMPP.
Multiple platforms can be combined into a single Nextcloud Talk room, so messages can be transferred from Slack to Teams and IRC through Nextcloud.
Webinars and presentations
Share content from a single window or your entire desktop screen for presentations with chat partners. Manage participants by inviting, disconnecting, or removing them. Schedule meetings and receive notifications when they start.
In the lobby, guests can wait for the call to start. Participants can raise their hand to get attention or give a chance to speak.
Reliability and confidentiality
Calls are encrypted with end-to-end encryption, so your communications cannot be intercepted*. Chat logs are securely stored on your server. Confidentiality of communication and its metadata is guaranteed by Nextcloud Talk’s own hosting!
*Individual and group calls are 100% encrypted without a high-performance backend. When HPB is used, all calls are routed through it. The HPB is also hosted on its server, so there is no data leakage outside the server.
Video verification
There are situations where maximum security is required and the person joining the chat must be verified before they are granted access. In this case, Nextcloud includes the industry’s first implementation of video verification.
Video verification ensures that a Nextcloud Talk video call is made before access to a shared resource is granted, ensuring proper identity verification. The call can be accepted through the Nextcloud Talk Mobile apps as well as the web interface.
