The state of South Dakota, home to Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, provides a variety of government services to residents and visitors to the state. Many of these are accessible to users through a web interface and managed through a series of secure websites and web applications.
“One of the features we find most useful is reporting. The reports are very clear and informative for our development team.”
Miguel Penaranda
Deputy Chief Information Security Officer at SD BIT
South Dakota’s challenge was to securely access the personal data of one million residents
The combined number of residents, visitors, and staff who live, work, and travel through South Dakota County each year creates a vast amount of data. From contact information and marital status to identification documents, certificates, and permits, Miguel Penaranda, Deputy Chief Information Security Officer at SD BIT, says:
“Data is constantly being updated both internally by our administrative and management staff and externally by residents and others through our numerous web application interfaces. Regardless of location or who is entering the data, it must be accessed, entered, and stored securely.”
SD BIT’s needs were simple: identify the most accurate scanner on the market, as well as one that is easiest to implement and use. Their web security team was looking for the latest and greatest innovations. Ease of setup and use, as well as accuracy, were top priorities.
After reviewing what was available on the market and running tests to determine the accuracy of each solution considered, South Dakota decided to implement Invicti’s web application security tool.
Faster fixes support long-term data security investments
At SD BIT, the development team found that scanning reports were crucial to achieving their goals:
“One of the features we find most useful is the reporting. The reports are very clear and informative for our development team.”
And while the entire team was able to get up to speed quickly, they find the support from Invicti invaluable.
“The support team was very responsive to our requests and always looked for new ways to help.”
The partnership with Invicti has been recognized across all areas of IT provisioning in South Dakota as a sound investment in the long-term security of residents’ data.
